Ashworths is a firm of commercial and residential property solicitors in Southfields, ideally placed to assist you in buying your new home or business premises in the area. Read on for the lowdown on Southfields.
Southfields is a lovely, desirable neighbourhood with a quaint, sleepy village vibe. Residents enjoy beautiful tree-lined streets and spacious Edwardian homes at significantly lower prices than Wimbledon. There is much open green space nearby, as well as brilliant schooling options, making it the area perfect for families. The All England Lawn Tennis Club, home to the world-famous Wimbledon Tennis Championships, is actually in Southfields, which means that once a year the neighbourhood becomes very busy and lively.
The area has an interesting and diverse history. In 1926, Southfields made history by becoming home to the first mosque in all of London. The Fazl Mosque, or London Mosque, was built by the Ahmadiyya Muslim community and currently serves as the international headquarters of the community. The area has even more cultural relevance: part of the music video for Shampoo’s iconic 1994 single ‘Trouble’ was filmed in Southfields. The area has also had several notable residents: George Eliot lived on Wimbledon Park Road while writing one of her novels, and Eleanor Roosevelt attended Allenswood Academy from 1899-1902.
Residents enjoy a multitude of eating and drinking choices. The Italian Olive Garden is a long-time local neighbourhood favourite. Keen for a pub? The Earl Spencer is a large and popular gastropub. There is also the Park Tavern, a restored 19th-century coaching inn with a beautifully landscaped garden and distinguished interior.

There is an abundance of lovely green space in and around Southfields, including Wimbledon Park and the River Wandle, which offer a variety of walks and cycles to enjoy. Nearby Wimbledon Common is the largest expanse of heathland in London, boasting a windmill, several ponds, the remains of an Iron Age forge, and two nature reserves. The park is the perfect spot to go walking or jogging, with a park run held every Saturday morning.
Southfields is served by bus routes 39 (Clapham Junction to Putney Bridge), 493 (Tooting, St George’s Hospital to Richmond), and 156 (Vauxhall to Wimbledon). Southfields tube station is situated between East Putney and Wimbledon Park on the District line, making it extremely well-connected to the rest of London. Southfields is also the main London Underground station for the Wimbledon Championships, with the All England Lawn Tennis Club a simple 5 minute walk from the station.
Commercial Property Lawyers
Practical, expert legal advice for developers, investors and property professionals
There is a good community spirit in Southfields with a number of independents present on the high street as well as some more familiar chains. The independent shops are quirky and certainly worth a visit: from Florentina Boutique, showcasing the best pieces from French and Italian Designers, to 243 Decorative Antiques, where you can source 19th and 20th century French furniture antiques.
The main residential areas of Southfields are ‘The Triangle’ and ‘The Grid.’ The Triangle consists mostly of Victorian and Edwardian houses. The Grid is a series of parallel roads that are crossed at right angles by a series of parallel streets and consists almost entirely of Edwardian terrace houses, some of which have been converted into flats. As well as Victorian and Edwardian terraces, there are larger detached and semi-detached 1930s and 1950s houses, many have been converted into modern apartments.
There are a variety of very good schooling choices in and around Southfields. Primary schools include Albermarle Primary, St Michael’s C of E Primary, Sheringdale Primary School, Wimbledon Park Primary School and West Hill Primary. Secondary schools include St Cecilia’s or Southfields Academy, as well as many other schools in nearby Wandsworth and Wimbledon. There are also many private education options in Putney, Wimbledon and Wandsworth.
