History of Coombe

Coombe has a rich history dating back to at least the Domesday Book, where it was recorded as Cumbe. Roman coins have been discovered in the area, adding to its historical significance. In 1822, the Admiralty established a semaphore station in the area as part of the communication line between London and Portsmouth. During World War II, General Dwight D. Eisenhower lived at Telegraph Cottage while serving as Supreme Allied Commander. Coombe is also home to three Tudor-era conduits, built to supply water from springs in Coombe to Hampton Court Palace — all of which are still visible today and now listed as historic monuments. British Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone spent extended periods here as a guest of friends.
