The Colliers Wood neighbourhood

Colliers Wood is one of south west London’s best-kept secrets. Not only does it share the famous Wimbledon SW19 postcode, but it benefits from being close to Wimbledon town centre with all of its amenities as well as Tooting, home to cool new restaurants and old established gems. The area also has a character all of its own with the likes of the eclectic enclave of Merton Abbey Mills.

History of Colliers Wood

The area has many fascinating historical links. Merton Priory was established here in 1117 on its current site by Gilbert, sheriff of Surrey. Thomas Becket, later Archbishop of Canterbury, was educated here. You can still see the remains of the Chapter House of the medieval monastery. The River Wandle was key to the area’s development, and the fast-flowing waters powered Merton Abbey Mills, which produced stained glass, textiles, tapestries and carpets for William Morris and prints for Liberty. The world’s first public railway, the Surrey Iron Railway, passed through Colliers Wood on its route from Croydon to Wandsworth, between 1803 and 1846.

Eating and drinking in Colliers Wood

Merton Abbey Mills is home to independent restaurants and cafes, as well as The William Morris pub on the banks of the River Wandle. Head out into Tooting and you will find many highly-regarded informal restaurants offering food from around the world, in particular, Sri Lankan, Indian and Pakistani, as well as casual joints in Tooting Market with everything from craft beer and gin to noodle bars and Caribbean treats. There are also top-rated spots nearby such as Smoke & Salt.
