The Croydon neighbourhood

Many areas of Croydon are considered ‘up and coming,’ with its large and diverse population, rich commercial centre, and vibrant cultural scene drawing many new property owners looking for a lively neighbourhood. Croydon has many key attractions drawing residents and visitors, including BOXPARK street food hub, Fairfield Halls for theatre and concerts, and a selection of shopping spots like Whitgift. The area is home to the Surrey Street Market, a fixture of the area since the 13th Century, where fresh produce is sold from Monday through to Saturday, with an artisan market on Sundays.

History of Croydon

Croydon dates back to early British history: the earliest recorded date of the existence of Croydon Palace is 960, and the palace’s current buildings were erected in the 15th and 16th centuries. In fact, the palace was the summer home of the Archbishop of Canterbury for over 500 years. There are several other historical links and curiosities to be found in the area: Croydon Airport, which closed in 1959, was the UK’s foremost international airport in the interwar period, and was the site of the world’s first traffic control tower. In the early 2000s, Croydon was at the epicentre of the development of the music genre Dubstep, with artists like Benga and Skream honing their sound at the now-defunct Big Apple Records on Surrey Street.

Croydon’s BOXPARK development has made it a hotspot for foodies, with plenty of bars and restaurants to visit. If you’re looking for a somewhere special to go to eat out, popular spots among locals include the quirky, cosy Little Bay, Indian restaurant Khyber, and the gastropub The Bull. Croydon enjoys excellent transport links, served by East Croydon, South Croydon and West Croydon railway stations, with West Croydon connecting to the London Overground.
