Guide to Richmond

Rated 4.6 stars on Trustpilot and Google

Ashworths is a firm of commercial and residential property solicitors in Richmond, ideally placed to assist you in buying your new home or business premises in the area. Read on for the lowdown on Richmond.

The Richmond neighbourhood

Leafy Richmond is an extremely desirable place to live, with its Thames-side setting, boutique shopping, and wealth of restaurants. Head up the hill for stunning views: so stunning, in fact, they are protected by an Act of Parliament. From here, gaze out over Petersham Meadows to the river beyond, ideally with a drink in hand from the Roebuck pub. Notable past and present residents include J.M.W. Turner, who painted this view and lived nearby in Twickenham, and members of the Rolling Stones. Property here is stunning, with multi-million-pound price tags to match, though there are also flats and Victorian terraces available. Richmond offers Michelin-starred restaurants, historic riverside pubs, and a wide choice of cafés. There’s a polo club nearby too. Schools include the German School in Petersham and the private prep school King’s House. Richmond is well connected, with an overground station serving Waterloo and Reading, as well as the District Line.

Twickenham

It may be best known as the home of rugby, but there is much more to Twickenham than its stadium. The area is rich in history, with literary and artistic connections. Charles Dickens referenced Twickenham in his writing and once rented a house here. Strawberry Hill House, a curious white castle built by Horace Walpole, is a local landmark. Eel Pie Island has a fascinating past, once hosting legendary gigs by the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, and David Bowie. Today, you can buy property on this artsy island. On the mainland, housing ranges from substantial period homes to flats and townhouses. The riverside is undergoing redevelopment, with work set to complete by autumn 2027. The area boasts excellent schools, including Waldegrave School for Girls, Orleans Park, and private options such as Radnor House.

Barnes

Barnes has a village-like feel that appeals to families, with open green spaces, riverside walks, and the London Wetland Centre. The local shops are predominantly high-end and independent. Barnes also boasts a thriving arts scene, with OSO Arts Centre hosting theatre, comedy, and music, and the Olympic Studios cinema screening a wide range of films, sometimes with guest appearances by the stars themselves. As expected in such a well-heeled area, property prices are high. Beautiful, double-fronted Victorian houses are particularly sought-after, but there are also mansion flats and modern apartments. Top school options include the Swedish School and The Harrodian. Barnes and Barnes Bridge stations provide overground rail connections.

Teddington

Teddington, another riverside gem, boasts a vibrant high street, excellent restaurants, and a diverse range of properties, from modern apartments in the former Teddington Film Studios to grand homes backing onto the Thames. The Landmark Arts Centre hosts music, comedy, and exhibitions, while the town’s many independent pubs and restaurants contribute to its community feel. Teddington is also known for its sporting culture, with rowing, tennis, and hockey clubs. Beautiful walks can be had along the river by the lock, or head out into Bushy Park – one of the Royal Parks and home to deer, woodland and meandering streams. The area offers good state primary schools and a large secondary school. Teddington station provides direct overground services to Waterloo.

Kew

Kew is home to the world-renowned Royal Botanic Gardens, a major centre for plant research and a popular attraction for tourists and locals alike, who enjoy strolling through its formal gardens and grand glasshouses. The area also features a charming village green surrounded by pubs and restaurants. Nearby, you’ll find handsome Victorian homes and some Georgian gems in tree-lined streets. There are also a range of flats in modern developments. Transport links include the District Line from Kew Gardens station, overground services from Kew Bridge, and easy access to the M4. You can even take a boat from Kew Pier. Kew House School is a highly regarded independent secondary school in the area.

There’s a range of attractive period properties as well as flats to choose from. A train station links direct to Waterloo so it is a good choice for commuters. With Kingston just over the bridge, there is also easy access to a huge range of shops, a theatre, cinemas, restaurants and bars.
