Ashworths Solicitors is a well-established firm of commercial and residential property solicitors based in Wimbledon. Read on for the lowdown on Wimbledon.
There’s so much more to Wimbledon than the world’s most famous tennis fortnight. The area of Wimbledon divides roughly into the bustling town with the station, and the quaint Village up the hill from the town. Wimbledon Town residents benefit from the amenities of a thriving cosmopolitan centre, as well as proximity to the Village with its open spaces, boutiques, independents and traditional pubs. Families and professionals settle here in large numbers given the excellent transport links to the Capital.
Wimbledon’s history goes way back and the Village has been inhabited since at least the Iron Age – and there is evidence of a hill fort to prove it. Over time, it became a magnet for various earls and wealthy landowners who built grand houses around and about. The common was a notorious spot for highwaymen and a popular place for duels. With the arrival of the railway in 1838, development moved away from the Village to around the station in what is now the town centre.
Wimbledon Town has a more modern history than the Village since the building of the railway station in 1838, and is centred on The Broadway. During the second half of the 19th century there was a rapid expansion in population matched with the building of a large number of villas and terraced houses along the roads from the centre towards Putney, Merton Park and Raynes Park. There is a good choice of Victorian streets with attractive four and five bedroom houses. A number of new-build apartment blocks have recently been developed offering ideal opportunities for investors and first-time buyers.

Wimbledon Town has plenty of choice, from excellent Indian at Bombay Delight to Asian street food in fun surrounds at Tampopo. Go wine and oyster tasting at Oy Bar, tuck into steaks at Buenos Aires and enjoy a pint at The Alexandra. Wander up the hill to the Village for yet more dining options.
South Park Gardens offers a green retreat in the town. Head up to Wimbledon Common, offering vast open spaces perfect for a stroll or there’s Cannizaro Park, a pretty landscaped garden. There are two cinemas and two theatres: the Grade II listed Edwardian New Wimbledon Theatre is one of London’s largest and hosts numerous touring productions of musicals, ballets, operas and plays, as well as an annual Christmas pantomime. The Polka Theatre is further along The Broadway and is a specialist theatre for children. Wimbledon has its own football club, too, and you can catch a game at the stadium nearby. The area is also home to a wide range of fitness clubs.
