The Wimbledon neighbourhood

There’s so much more to Wimbledon than the world’s most famous tennis fortnight. The area of Wimbledon divides roughly into the bustling town with the station, and the quaint Village up the hill from the town. Wimbledon Town residents benefit from the amenities of a thriving cosmopolitan centre, as well as proximity to the Village with its open spaces, boutiques, independents and traditional pubs. Families and professionals settle here in large numbers given the excellent transport links to the Capital.

History of Wimbledon

Wimbledon’s history goes way back and the Village has been inhabited since at least the Iron Age – and there is evidence of a hill fort to prove it. Over time, it became a magnet for various earls and wealthy landowners who built grand houses around and about. The common was a notorious spot for highwaymen and a popular place for duels. With the arrival of the railway in 1838, development moved away from the Village to around the station in what is now the town centre.

Property in Wimbledon

Wimbledon Town has a more modern history than the Village since the building of the railway station in 1838, and is centred on The Broadway. During the second half of the 19th century there was a rapid expansion in population matched with the building of a large number of villas and terraced houses along the roads from the centre towards Putney, Merton Park and Raynes Park. There is a good choice of Victorian streets with attractive four and five bedroom houses. A number of new-build apartment blocks have recently been developed offering ideal opportunities for investors and first-time buyers.

The Polka Theatre is further along The Broadway and is a specialist theatre for children. Wimbledon has its own football club, too, and you can catch a game at the stadium nearby.
