Ashworths is a firm of commercial and residential property solicitors in Merton Park, ideally placed to assist you in buying your new home or business premises in the area. Read on for the lowdown on Merton Park.
Merton Park is a highly sought-after residential neighbourhood with beautiful tree-lined roads of detached and semi-detached houses. It is a mostly residential area, making it ideal for peaceful living and raising children, however its close proximity to Wimbledon and Raynes Park also means there are plenty of nearby places to shop, dine and socialise.
Merton Park is one of the earliest London Garden Suburbs, with its first houses dating back to the 1870s. The area is centred on the historic St Mary’s parish church, which was founded in the 12th Century by the Augustinian order of the nearby Merton Priory. The original farmland was bought in 1864 by wine merchant John Innes, who later developed the area’s well-known tree-lined road of houses between 1870 and 1904. After this time, the area became a hub for the study of genetics, when, following his death, John Innes left part of the park to become the John Innes Horticultural Institution. The first director was biologist William Bateson, who first coined the term ‘genetics’.
The nearby areas of Morden, Wimbledon and Raynes Park offer plenty of drinking and dining options within walking distance of Merton Park. For those who love a pub trip, the Leather Bottle is considered the neighbourhood local, while Wimbledon is filled with plenty of brilliant dining options: Bombay Delight for delicious Indian cuisine, Tampopo for East Asian noodles and curries, and many more. South Wimbledon has some quiet gems such as Aya, a Lebanese restaurant and Little Vietnam, well known for its authentic pho.
