Wandsworth

The London Borough of Wandsworth includes areas such as Wandsworth Town, Wandsworth Common and Putney as well as Roehampton, Earlsfield, Battersea, Tooting, and parts of Clapham and Balham. It is a diverse and cosmopolitan borough, with a vibrant cultural scene – enhanced further with Wandsworth becoming London’s Borough of Culture for 2025. Wandsworth Arts Fringe brings a whole programme of dance, theatre, and music to various venues across the borough each summer. The River Wandle, from which Wandsworth got its name, became a centre for industry, with its fast-flowing waters powering the area’s mills. Wandsworth was once famous for its hats – during the 17th and 18th centuries the Huguenots settled here, drawn by its cloth mills.

Wandsworth Town

With a vibrant restaurant and café scene, attractive Victorian houses and quick tube journey into Central London, it’s no wonder that Clapham Common is a popular spot. Restaurant-wise, you are spoiled for choice, from the
Michelin-starred Trinity to great pubs like The Windmill. For culture, there’s the Omnibus Theatre, arts organisation and gallery Studio Voltaire, an annual book festival and a Picturehouse Cinema. Venn Street’s Saturday market selling local produce and artisan treats adds to the charm of the neighbourhood. The common is a much-loved spot which is home to a bandstand and cafes, and hosts festivals and funfairs. Georgian properties around the Old Town area and substantial Victorian homes overlooking the common are some of the most coveted addresses in London. Top schools are another big draw, including Eaton House and Parkgate House prep schools. Clapham’s Holy Trinity Church is associated with William Wilberforce and “The Clapham Sect’ who worshipped here during the time they campaigned for the abolition of the slave trade.

Wandsworth Common

Well-heeled Wandsworth Common offers the best of all worlds, being close to London but with a village-like feel. Independent shops, bars and restaurants line Bellevue Road, which runs along the pretty common. It’s here you’ll find the Michelin-starred gem Chez Bruce. The common is a beautiful spot for a stroll where you can pop into the popular Skylark afterwards for coffee and cake. The leafy neighbourhood has impressive Victorian villas to choose from that command a premium, but you can also find modern apartments too. There are Overground trains to London Victoria and London Bridge, bus routes, and the Northern Line tube from Tooting Bec. Schools include Finton House and Wandsworth Prep.

Balham

Balham developed after the arrival of the railway and has evolved over time to become a diverse and buzzy enclave. The area has rows of Victorian and Edwardian houses, many are flats but you can also pick up grand period homes with gardens in the Heaver Estate towards Tooting Bec. If you love Art Deco, then a flat in Du Cane Court will be your dream. You’re close to Tooting Bec Common for weekend walks or a dip in the famous lido.
There are plenty of top spots to eat including Milk for brunch, Gurkha’s Diner for top-notch Nepalese and bars such as The Exhibit, and The Bedford for comedy nights and live music. The area is well-served by the Northern Line and Overground trains. Local school choices include Rutherford House and Eveline Day School.

Putney

With its pretty riverside, which comes alive every year during the famous Boat Race between Oxford and Cambridge, Putney is an appealing spot that is popular with young professionals and families. There’s a busy high street and the neighbourhood has a varied selection of shops, bars and restaurants. For food, locals love Home SW15, Colombo Kitchen and Roxie Steak, to name but a few. Highly-regarded independent schools include Putney High School for girls. Transport is via Overground train and the District Line at East Putney and Putney Bridge. There’s a riverboat service too. Putney has an interesting history – famous residents include Henry VIII’s chief minister Thomas Cromwell – who was born of humble origins here. The area is associated with another famous Cromwell – Oliver, whose New Model Army used Putney as a headquarters: the renowned ‘Putney Debates’, which paved the way for civil liberties in England, were held at St Mary’s Church.

Battersea

Battersea’s regeneration has made it a prime spot for young professionals who are attracted to riverside apartments with fabulous views. Grade II listed Battersea Power Station takes pride of place among it all, offering upscale shopping and Thameside dining. Meanwhile, the area has always been a big draw for families – hence its nickname Nappy Valley, particularly the streets close to Northcote Road – a fabulous spot for shopping with gift shops, specialist interiors stores and high-end food retailers. Culture vultures are catered for well in Battersea with the likes of Battersea Arts Centre and Arches Lane Theatre. Battersea Park offers formal gardens, a boating lake and zoo. Clapham Junction (confusingly in Battersea so technically in the borough of Wandsworth!) offers a quick journey into Victoria and Waterloo and out towards Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire. Schools include co-ed prep Thomas’s Battersea.
