Lambeth

The London Borough of Lambeth includes Brixton, Streatham, Vauxhall, Clapham and West Norwood. It is hugely diverse and features a mix of highly desirable established enclaves such as Clapham Common as well as neighbourhoods undergoing gentrification. The origins of the name Lambeth are disputed but likely to have come from Lamhytha or Lambehith, meaning a landing place for lambs. Part of the borough runs along the riverfront, which has benefited from significant renewal. Great transport links and a range of housing stock make Lambeth a popular choice for commuters. The green space of Clapham Common adds to the area’s appeal. Cricket fans will be in their element in Lambeth as it is home to the famous Oval grounds. Part of London’s South Bank area is in Lambeth, including famous attractions such as the London Eye.

Clapham Common

With a vibrant restaurant and café scene, attractive Victorian houses and quick tube journey into Central London, it’s no wonder that Clapham Common is a popular spot. Restaurant-wise, you are spoiled for choice, from the
Michelin-starred Trinity to great pubs like The Windmill. For culture, there’s the Omnibus Theatre, arts organisation and gallery Studio Voltaire, an annual book festival and a Picturehouse Cinema. Venn Street’s Saturday market selling local produce and artisan treats adds to the charm of the neighbourhood. The common is a much-loved spot which is home to a bandstand and cafes, and hosts festivals and funfairs. Georgian properties around the Old Town area and substantial Victorian homes overlooking the common are some of the most coveted addresses in London. Top schools are another big draw, including Eaton House and Parkgate House prep schools. Clapham’s Holy Trinity Church is associated with William Wilberforce and “The Clapham Sect’ who worshipped here during the time they campaigned for the abolition of the slave trade.
